What is Abacus?

We know, after careful scientific research, that the helps to enhance the cognitive functions of the brain. While understanding what is Abacus is quite simple, to maximise its utility, students need to enrol in our training classes. In answer to the question of what’s an Abacus, you must know that it is an instrument similar to a calculator that helps in solving mathematical problems. Children can learn to add, subtract, multiply or divide numbers by moving the beads attached to them.

Understanding the Abacus

We feel that as soon as a child can count from1 to a hundred, he should be taught to understand what is it. The maximum brain development takes place at this age in kids. Hence, it becomes easier for kids to enhance their cognitive abilities thereby ensuring the development of both the right and the left sides of the brain.

To explain it and its benefits, it can be said that it is an effective tool that not only helps in the calculation of sums but the learning programme assists children in increasing their learning and visualization skills. Moreover, it enables the children to achieve higher concentration, accuracy and proficiency in their studies.

Learning about the different techniques we, at BYITC, use to help students understand it also helps parents get a clear idea of what is involved. We tell them about the different stages of the programs like:

• Introducing the kids to the physical tool and enabling them to feel and understand the different parts of the abacus

• Encouraging them to think of mathematical numbers as beads

• Learning the value of the beads is a fundamental requirement of understanding what is it

• Teaching the kids to use the finger technique to move the beads and perform calculations

• Using the virtual abacus

Since many different types of calculations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, BODMAS, decimals, fractions etc., can be done using the abacus, we stress the importance of understanding  Abacus thoroughly.

We feel that once a child has mastered the handling, performing the calculations become easier. Only after kids master the finger technique and become proficient in handling the physical tool and the finger technique do we move on to teaching them to use the virtual abacus.

We consider learning to use the virtual tool as the most difficult part of understanding what is it. Hence, we spend ample time with the students to help them in learning the techniques to imagine and visualise. By using mental maths techniques like flashcard training etc, we help kids master the art of solving mathematical problems quickly and accurately just by glancing at or listening to them only once.

When parents come to us to enrol their kids, we are generally asked to explain what is Abacus. Along with describing the tool, we also make it a point to make parents understand the need for learning the abacus and how it helps their kids become confident and self-assured individuals.

Hence, if you want to see the same kind of skills development in your child, help them learn to understand the nuances of Abacus by enrolling them in our abacus learning classes. Come soon and make maths enjoyable for your kid!
